Activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, archery and martial arts have been employed alongside more popular sports like football and rugby in a programme that aims to tackle disengagement from education among 11- to 16-year-olds. Living For Sport, which has been piloted in 42 schools, adopts a seven-stage approach to identify and improve behaviour and attendance among young people most in need of help.
The children are given a central role in deciding what activities they participate in, says Jenny Burrowes, innovations development officer at the Youth Sport Trust, which runs the programme with broadcaster BSkyB.
