When international weightlifter Alex Richardson started training young people in a coal bunker 19 years ago, he couldn't have envisaged he would end up leading an organisation that was recognised with a Queen's Award for Voluntary Service for its work with children in the disadvantaged Glasgow area of Easterhouse. But that's what The Gladiator Programme has just achieved. It works with 1,500 children and young people in the area, starting with play activities then offering weightlifting training and other sports, as well as running 20 football teams.
