What it is: The play part of the Kendray Initiative, a regeneration project

Goal: To help turn around the run down Kendray estate in Barnsley byproviding play facilities for children and young people

At the end of the 1990s, the Kendray estate was in trouble. Residentslived in surroundings blighted by a combination of anti-socialbehaviour, drug abuse and boarded up properties.

In 1999, fed up with the estate's decline, residents joined forces withlocal councillors to launch a regeneration project designed to turn thesituation around. The project, the Kendray Initiative, brought togetherlocal services, residents and councillors. In 2002 the project recruiteda children and young people's representative to find out what could bedone to help the estate's children and stop anti-social behaviour byteenagers.
