In recent years, the Cathedral Gardens area of central Manchester hasbecome a place for young people from alternative subcultures, such asskaters and goths, to gather.

Each Saturday around 200 young people gather at the site, which lastyear prompted calls from Greater Manchester Police for a dispersal orderamid concerns over litter, public drinking and anti-socialbehaviour.

To address this, in April this year, Manchester City Centre Managementprovided funding to the Depaul Trust to recruit a team of eight paidpeer youth workers, aged between 14 and 16. The team had the task ofengaging with young people in the gardens, discouraging anti-socialbehaviour and organising activities such as litter picking.
