Inside story: Gatsby Early Years Enhancement Programme

What it is: An early years programme designed to encourage parents to communicate and interact with their children.

Aim: To introduce parents to early learning goals and provide childrenwith a good start to education.

"Both of us used to be primary school headteachers so we were aware thata growing number of children were coming into education with a verylow-level of communication skills," says Vicky Parker, nationalco-ordinator for the Early Years Enhancement Programme run by the GatsbyCharitable Foundation.

In response to this, Parker and Sue Robinson, the programme director'set up the innovative Make a Difference course.

The programme operates in various locations in England including Leeds,Tower Hamlets, Middlesbrough and Grimsby.

It gives parents pre-nursery and pre-school packs that encourage them tocommunicate and interact with children. They also attend a short courseand receive home visits so children can be assessed by teachers.
