Inside story: Bump

What it is: Bump (Befriending Unaccompanied Minors Project) is run by Save the Children and works with 14- to 18-year-old refugees in Birmingham, Solihull and neighbouring areas

Goals: To help these young people overcome isolation and developconfidence and skills to help them rebuild their lives in the UK

Funding: The project receives funding from Solihull Metropolitan BoroughCouncil and Save the Children

Bump has been running since 2002 and supports nearly 100 young refugeesaged 14 to 18 in the Midlands.

The aim of the project is for the refugees to meet young Britishpeople.

"We are trying to provide a forum and network where young refugees canbuild up friendships with young British people," explains the project'sco-ordinator Hannah Newth. "A lot of meaningful relationships get formedand this can give these refugees valuable support. They do get formalstatutory support as none of them come here with their parents. But thisless formal support is very important. These are young people with somevery sad and difficult stories."
