Inside Story: Safe

1 min read
What it is: A project that works with young people in Hounslow in London tackling major health issues such as young parenthood, sexual and mental health, drugs, alcohol and substance misuse

Goals: To provide information and advice on a range of health-related issues and so cut down on the rates of smoking, teenage pregnancy, drugs, alcohol and substance misuse

Funding: Three years of funding from the Big Lottery Fund

Contact: Bill Pickard, Safe project director, 020 8400 8516, www.safe-project.org.uk

The Safe project prides itself on the way it listens to young people and "doesn't preach". It mainly works as a virtual healthy living centre with its web site, So Safe (www.sosafe.org.uk), featuring a cartoon soap opera with real dilemmas every month.

Children from Hounslow schools helped both to create the characters and develop the storyline. "They are so proud of them and it has given them a real sense of ownership," said Bill Pickard, Safe project director.
