The instability in looked-after young people's lives often makes itdifficult for them to trust others or themselves.
So Shaftesbury Homes and Arethusa has taken the unusual step of usinghorses to help 11- to 17-year-olds from its homes regain their sense ofself-belief.
The approach, begun last November, involves a mental healthprofessional, certified equine specialist and specially trained horsesworking with a young person.
Activities do not involve riding, but ground activities in a ring, building non-verbal communication skills, problem-solving andco-operation.
For example, young people are asked to get a horse to complete ajump.
