Inside Story: Be Yourself

1 min read
What it is: A 12-week pilot project based loosely on citizenship

Goal: To get young people in Bexley to learn alternative skills to get them into jobs or college

Funding: 5,000 from Bexley Council's Areas of Opportunity programme

Contact: John Seal, Bexley Council, 020 8303 7777

The Be Yourself project, set up as a joint venture between the Pupil Referral Unit in Slade Green and Bexley Council, took a group of Year 10 students and taught them how to help their local community.

"Our aim was to get young people involved in activities in the community, with a view to gaining alternative accreditations," explained James Alexander, schools' team co-ordinator at Bexley Youth Services.

The scheme's main themes were adapted from Bexley's Active Community Leaders project, which trains adults to run community projects. This was combined with elements of the Year 10 Citizenship PSHE curriculum.
