Inclusion: Northeast engages most young people in training

The region engaged an extra 1,300 16- and 17-year-olds in 2005 compared with 2004, a rise from 78 per cent to 80 per cent. The Learning and Skills Council attributed this to the increasing amount of options available.

A spokeswoman for the Learning and Skills Council in the Northeast region said: "We've done a lot of work to change our curriculum offer and there is a lot of choice for young people. The take-up of education maintenance allowances is the highest in the country."

Maggi Hunt, Connexions Tyne and Wear chief executive, said: "Connexions has achieved a strong focus on finding productive opportunities for young people, but we don't do anything without our partners."
