Social exclusion: Progress on reducing NEET figures is slowing

Information supplied to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) from Connexions partnerships shows the proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds in this category in March this year remained static at last year's figure of 8.4 per cent, compared with nine per cent in March 2004.

The proportion of disengaged teenagers fell in all regions from 2004 to 2005. But in 2005 to 2006, only five regions managed to drive the numbers down further. In three regions, West Midlands, the Southeast and the East of England, the proportion of disengaged young people has increased since last year. In the West Midlands and the Southeast it has returned to 2004 levels, and in the East of England it has nearly reached 2004 levels.
