Big interview: Steps to raise aspirations

As the newly appointed regional chair of the Learning and Skills Council in the northeast of England, James Ramsbotham admits he was "surprised but pleased" to find his area is the leader in getting 16- and 17-year-olds into education, employment or training.

It is a subject close to his heart, because in his day job as vice-chairman of construction firm the Esh Group, he has championed the Fit for Employment scheme, helping young people who leave school after their GCSEs into work.

This led to links with the Learning and Skills Council, and ultimately to his appointment as chair of the Northeast region.
