He describes the role as "hugely exciting" and is certainly well placed to do it. The Liberal Democrat councillor is the leader of Islington Council, and vice-chair of the Local Government Association's Children and Young People Board.

"There are huge numbers of children and young people in London," he says.

"It is probably one of the toughest environments to grow up in. There are enormous challenges, but also enormous opportunities."

One such challenge is ensuring that London's diverse communities live happily with each other, which is where he thinks youth services can play a part. "The youth service is crucial to building the sort of sustainable communities we want to see," he says.
