Perhaps because of this, Livingstone is keen to make sure the young people of today have more of a say in their own lives than he did.
He is a keen supporter of Lewisham's initiative, where a young person is elected by their peers to stand alongside the borough's adult mayor, and is also in favour of school councils.
"They should be given real powers," he says. "In schools and colleges there should always be a participatory democracy so kids learn as they are going through the education system that they've got a right to be heard. They need to be able to articulate what they want, and they need to be able to participate."
