In the News: Sunderland Council accused of making 'grave' error over playground design

We're all for innovative play spaces but has Sunderland Council gone too far?

The authority has been trying to defend a new £70,000 playground that "looks more like a graveyard", according to bemused parents.

It seemed local families had the audacity to expect some swings and a slide. "I think it's a shambles and a death trap. I've seen kids of six and seven climbing on the poles. Can you imagine what would happen if they fell off them?" one told the Sunderland Echo.

Julie Gray, Sunderland's head of community services, said children, parents and play professionals had been involved from the outset.

Nevertheless, we've yet to hear what children and young people make of the design - although it seems they have been risking life and limb playing on it.
