Performance: The percentage of looked-after children adopted during the year within 12 months of the decision that they should be placed for adoption, and who remained in that placement

Adoption: Sunderland City Council's performance around adoption has fluctuated over the past few years. However, Nick Murphy, acting manager, services for looked-after children at Sunderland City Council, says the authority has done a lot of work to recruit potential adoptive parents.

"We always visit someone who has expressed an interest in adopting, right at the outset," he says. "It's not something all other authorities do. Some people who come forward have quite set ideas of what they want - a lot of people want to adopt babies. Through discussions it may be that we can help them see that they could be happy with an older child."
