Performance: Percentage of looked-after children placed for adoption within 12 months after the decision that they should be adopted
Looked-after children in Bristol are consistently being adopted within a 12-month target, well above the national average.
The authority has outperformed the national average with 87.9 per cent placed within 12 months of a decision being made last year, more than 12 per cent above the average for England.
A drop in performance in 2008, when 65 per cent were placed within a year, is attributed to low numbers of children up for adoption, according to Kate O'Brien, adoption manager at Bristol City Council. She says the low numbers can lead to anomalies when there is a particular group of children difficult to place, such as siblings.
