Sunderland schools, North East

What's it all about? Children in Sunderland have pledged their support for National Heart Month. Sunderland Council's attendance group manager Phil Hayden explains: "Heart conditions are a major issue in the North East and it is vital to give every child the best start in life to support their future health."

How did they do it? Heart-themed arts and crafts, cookery sessions and regular exercise lessons were on offer. "Sunderland's Healthy Heart Month has given the children a great opportunity to learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in maintaining good health," adds Hayden. Special assemblies were held as part of the British Heart Foundation's Wear Red Day and children were given certificates for taking part.

How did it go? Sally Collingwood, head teacher at Diamond Hall Infant School, says: "All the children and teachers really embraced the different activities in February. The assembly was a wonderful way to reward them and they were excited to receive certificates."
