When PC Alan Milliner devised a way to combat youth crime in St Austell, Cornwall, he could not have guessed at the success it would have.

Back in 2003 he piloted the White Gold Project, which involves the police, youth offending team and community safety groups working with prolific, vulnerable or at risk 10- to 19-year-old offenders.

Four years on, it has spread to other areas in Cornwall and a review of the project suggests that it has reduced crime by 56 per cent.
