In Practice: Know how - Child protection

2 mins read
The government last month launched its Staying Safe: Action Plan setting out cross-government work over the next three years to drive improvements in child safety.

Settings such as children's centres and extended schools have a vital role to play in safeguarding children as does anyone working with children, young people and families. Having a clear and robust child protection policy is essential. Here are some points to remember.

Safeguarding children in the broadest sense of the word should run through all the work you do. You need clear policies and procedures that all staff and volunteers know well. It should be part of induction and ongoing training.

Always focus on the needs of the child. This may seem obvious but when you're working with families the focus can sometimes shift to parents and their needs. You need to engage with and work with adults but never forget the child's needs come first.
