With its popular breakfast and after-school clubs in danger of collapse,Edmund Waller Primary School in Lewisham took an innovative step. Itdecided to set up a "school company" - Edmund Waller School Services -to take over.

"Previously, it was a separate voluntary organisation and struggled withsustainability - not in a financial sense but because it lacked a robustmanagement structure," says company chair Neil Gordon-Orr.

The limited company is now run by a board including head teacher GrahamJameson, governors, and representatives from Lewisham's children'sservices, the Parent Teachers Association and the local community.

The move was complex and it cost up to an estimated 15,000 toachieve.

However, it has brought many benefits.
