Objectives St Cuthbert's and Palatine Children's Centre is a brand newcentre due to open in January at St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary Schoolin Blackpool. The plans included an outdoor area, but centre managerHelen Cook and early years teachers were keen for this to be bigger andto include a natural environment for children to play and learn in,especially as some of the families who'll use the centre don't havegardens or only limited access to outdoor space. "The aim was to createa fun environment that children could explore using all their senses,"says Cook. However, the centre didn't have any extra money.
What was done First, the architects extended the space. Then Cook wroteto a number of local garden centres asking for sponsorship. Most saidthey could not help but she struck lucky with Ashtons of Lytham. Thelandscape manager - Steve Bennett - was a former pupil at St Cuthbert'sand the garden centre agreed to provide trees, plants and other featuresand put them in free of charge.
