Objectives Portsmouth and District Relate was struggling to get familiesin outlying deprived areas to come to its main centre. Meanwhile,Portsmouth City Council's exten-ded schools co-ordinator wanted todevelop relationship counselling for parents at local schools. GettingRelate counsellors working in schools meant the organisation would reachmore families, schools could refer those in difficulty, and parents andchildren would receive extra support.
What was done Relate is working with two extended schools projectmanagers.
It put some cash into the scheme and the project received a grant fromthe Lottery. Two Relate counsellors, who had just completed courses infamily counselling, have been assigned to two clusters of schools - onein Paulsgrove and one in North Island. If teachers notice a child oryoung person having problems they can flag this up. The counsellors canbe called in on an ad-hoc basis and moved between schools depending onwhere they're needed.
