HONOURS: Youth professionals recognised in New Year list

1 min read

Jean Horsburgh, the assistant chief executive of Connexions Tyne and Wear, was appointed OBE, while Bob Hodges, a personal adviser with Sheffield Futures, an amalgamation of the youth service and Connexions, was appointed MBE. Both have worked with young people for 30 years and joined Connexions from their local careers services.

Horsburgh said: "I am glad recognition is being given to the way we're developing services."

Hodges said: "The thrill for me is that someone thinks well enough of me to put me forward."

Others in the youth sector to be appointed OBE include John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth and vice-chair of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, and Mike Counsell, principal youth officer for Gloucestershire Youth Service. Counsell, a founder of the Association of Principal Youth and Community Officers, said: "Anything that improves the profile of youth work is good."
