Professor Eileen Munro, who led the government's review into child protection, and Social Work Reform Board chair Moira Gibb are among children and young people's professionals named in the Queen's New Year Honours list.

Gibb, chief executive of the London Borough of Camden, has been named a Dame for services to local government and social work, while Munro has been named a CBE.

Also receiving a CBE is England’s communication champion for children Jean Gross.

Anita Kerwin-Nye, director of the charity The Communication Trust, said: "She [Gross] has been a worthy champion, touring the country to see firsthand what was happening in different areas and gathering information.

"In troubling times for health and education she has championed the cause and helped find solutions."

Others honoured for services to children and young people include former Formula One champion and president of UK Youth Nigel Mansell, who has been named as a CBE. The charity’s trustee and vice-chair Anne Stoneham has also been honoured, with an MBE.

Charlotte Hill, chief executive of UK Youth, said: "As a charity we couldn’t wish for a better president. He gives up so much of his time for us and during our centenary year in 2010 he took part in a cycle ride across the UK for us. He is an inspiration to young people.

"Anne does so much behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. I couldn’t be more delighted about these two honours."

CBEs were also awarded to former Association of Directors of Children’s Services president Marion Davies, former chief executive of YouthNet Fiona Dawe, The Prince’s Trust chief executive Martina Milburn and Vanni Emanuele Treves, chair of the National College for School Leadership.

Fostering Network president James Bond has received an MBE and Christopher Preddie, who works with young offenders, has been named an OBE at the age of 24.
