1 min read

Ralph Sixsmith, chairman of Dearne Valley Venture in Bolton-upon-Dearne, was appointed MBE for services to young people. The organisation runs a Millennium Volunteers programme and Links4Youth.

Sixsmith also uses his woodcrafts skills to engage young people with learning difficulties and excluded 14- to 16-year-olds at Swinton Lock Adventure Centre. "Some of the young people have never made anything in their lives, so it instills a sense of achievement in them," he said.

Rachael Ronchetti, operations manager at Fairbridge Tyne and Wear, was also appointed MBE.

Roger Singleton, former chief executive of Barnardo's, was knighted, while those appointed OBE included Lady Bamford, vice-chair of the NSPCC's Full Stop campaign; Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland; and Jennifer Griffiths, chair of the Connexions Surrey partnership.
