The 9.4m in funding comes from the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It runs from 2006 to 2008, building on the 7m invested in the past two years.
The Department for Education and Skills said that galleries will have a central role to play in the Education Outside the Classroom manifesto, which is due to be published in the spring.
The funding will be spent on partnership development, regional councils, secondments for teachers and museum educators and support for galleries.
Suzanne Rider, co-ordinator of Opening the Doors, which encourages young people to go to museums, said: "Any funding is great, but it is often difficult to access."
