Schools minister Lord Andrew Adonis wants to see museums and galleriesplaying a central role in education outside the classroom. "Theprofessional development element of the programme will enable teachersand museum educators to gain a better understanding of each other'sneeds and provide a better experience for children and youngpeople."
The funding will be allocated to the 12 national museums, which are theBritish Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Gallery, National MaritimeMuseum, National Museums Liverpool, National Portrait Gallery, NaturalHistory Museum, the National Museum of Science and Industry, the Tate,the Victoria and Albert Museum, Wallace Collection and the BritishLibrary.
Nine regional museums will also benefit.
Some of the money will be given to the Museums, Libraries and ArchivesCouncil to spend on a programme of secondments for teachers, museum,gallery and archive staff.
