Young people gain knowledge and skills from taking over museums for the day

3 mins read Participation
Charity-run project supports disadvantaged children and young people to undertake roles in museums for a day to increase understanding, break down social barriers and develop confidence.

Name Takeover Day

Provider Kids in Museums

Takeover Day is a national initiative that takes place annually in November. The initiative has been growing since its launch in 2010, and last year nearly 200 museums were taken over by around 5,000 children and young people aged up to 25. Takeover Day is supported by Arts Council England, the Welsh government and several trusts and foundations.

Takeover Day aims to make museums easy to reach for all children and young people. Since Kids in Museums was founded in 2003, the charity has known that there are significant barriers to children, young people and families visiting museums. The most recent Taking Part survey published by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport shows that 37 per cent of 5- to 15-year-olds had not visited a museum in the past 12-months and this proportion has remained static for the past five years.
