Health News: Wales - Hospital's second phase is in doubt

The final phase of Wales' first children's hospital is in doubt despite the Welsh Assembly Government earmarking 38.5m to develop the project.

The first phase of the children's hospital, which focuses on general medicine, opened in March, but the second phase, which will focus on surgery, out-patients and critical care, has yet to be given the go-ahead.

Although Welsh health minister Dr Brian Gibbons confirmed in a letter to charity Noah's Ark that he had identified the amount needed to fund the project, Stephen Harries, director of development at Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, said there had been no agreement over the 7m annual running costs. He said there was no guarantee the scheme would go ahead.
