Analysis: Wales - Foundation Phase gathers speed

While England starts to implement the Early Years Foundation Stage, in Wales pilots of the Foundation Phase, a new curriculum for children aged three to seven, are well under way. Cathy Wallace gauges the feedback from schools and nurseries.

Much has been made of the introduction of the Early Years Foundation Stage, the first birth to five curriculum that comes into force in England from September next year.

Less well-publicised, however, is ongoing work in Wales to implement the new Foundation Phase, a curriculum for three- to seven-year-olds which will be rolled out across the country by 2010/11.Work is already well under way with pilots being carried out in 41 schools and settings including private, voluntary and independent nurseries and childminders.

The Welsh Assembly Government has also announced a recruitment drive, aimed at creating around 2,300 new vacancies in schools and nurseries, from 2008 - news that has been welcomed, but has led to a stark warning from nurseries.
