News Insight: Early years foundation stage - New curriculum gets under way

5 mins read Early Years
The Early Years Foundation Stage, the controversial curriculum for under-fives, came into force this week. Sue Learner and Ruth Smith find out whether the sector is prepared.

While some have criticised the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for being target-driven and "overly prescriptive", others claim practitioners have not had enough training and will struggle to implement the new curriculum.

The new framework, which became a requirement on 1 September, sets the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five and applies to all registered childminders, nurseries, out-of-school clubs, creches and schools with nursery facilities.

Nurseries have been working hard to prepare for its implementation and so most are well prepared, according to Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of National Day Nurseries Association.

But she adds: "Some issues remain around adequate levels of training, with some settings having limited access to local authority workshops or having to make their own arrangements, and support will need to continue beyond the official launch date."
