
This time last year the early years sector was gearing up for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The early learning framework, which became statutory for all under-fives provision in September 2008, initially drew a barrage of negative coverage. This included accusations that it was too focused on evidencing outcomes and created a tick-box culture.
But 12 months on, the EYFS has been generally well received, albeit with a few remaining dissenters.
The Pre-school Learning Alliance is surveying its members, but initial findings indicate a positive response. "EYFS has broadly been welcomed by settings and parents. Implementation is going well, but support and training needs to be maintained," says Michael Freeston, director of quality improvement at the alliance.
