Health News: Voluntary sector - Sports network project created

A project has been set up to build bridges between sports and voluntary groups to reach disadvantaged young people.

The Strategic Sports Partnership project, launched last week by theNational Association for Voluntary and Community Action, aims to tacklesports groups' reluctance to recognise and exploit their voluntarysector status.

Carrie McKenzie, sports partnership strategic adviser, said she would beworking to make links between sport and voluntary groups, primarily atregional level. "Sports organisations such as young people's footballgroups are connected to local sporting services, but are isolated fromthe voluntary sector," she said. "But the sector can provide childprotection training, access to funding and training if they want toexpand."

McKenzie said the project would also help sports groups team up withyouth groups to run projects to combat social exclusion.
