Health News: Scotland - Pupils to benefit from dance lessons

Thousands of children in Scotland's schools will sample dance lessons as part of a 1.2m initiative by the Scottish Executive.

During the next three years, 144,000 children in 800 schools will tryalternatives to more traditional exercise through the Dance in SchoolsInitiative.

Traditional Scottish dances do not feature in the plan, according toKatie McKeown of Ydance, the national youth dance agency that is leadingthe project.

Instead, she said pupils in every local authority will receive fiveweeks of workshops during curriculum time in contemporary dance, streetdance and choreography.

Class teachers, PE teachers and active school co-ordinators will also begiven training.

"Our research supports Sport Scotland work that shows a lot of groups, especially eight- to 11-year-old girls, are dropping out of PE becausethey're not being offered options that they want to do," said McKeown.
