More than 120,000 young patients and their parents or carers from every acute trust in England will be asked to take part in a survey by the Commission for Health Improvement.
The results will help evaluate the success of the children's national service framework.
Liz Fradd, leader of the children's programme at the commission, told Children Now the survey was "the first attempt to hear from children and families about the NHS".
Young in-patients or day cases will be asked about access, waiting times, the quality of information and the cleanliness and comfort of wards.
The Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection, which replaces the current commission in April, will survey children's experiences of other parts of the NHS.
The results for each trust will be published in the summer.
