Health news: Mental Health - Government resists Bill amendments

The Government is resisting mounting pressure to make it illegal to place teenagers on adult wards if sectioned under mental health laws.

Moves to prohibit the practice by amending the Mental Health Bill weredue to be debated in the House of Lords last week but this has beenmoved to late February.

Last week, the Lords heard that roughly one under-18-year-old had beenadmitted to an adult ward every day between April 2003 and October2006.

However, junior health minister Lord Hunt insisted the issue should betackled in guidance that accompanies the Bill. This states appropriateprovision should be supplied "where possible".
