Health News: Looked-after children - Project will focus on ethnicminorities

A two-year project has begun to help services provide the right health support to Black and ethnic minority children in and leaving care.

Despite the over-representation of Black and mixed-parentage children inthe care system, professionals complain of a lack of training to meetthe specific health needs of these children. This has led to concernsthat services are not providing equal treatment.

However, the National Children's Bureau (NCB) and its Healthy Careinitiative are now developing resources to tackle the problem, byimproving access to effective healthcare assessments and treatment.

Ellie Lewis, project manager at the NCB, said a questionnaire will beused to gain a picture of existing work. Three Healthy Care partnershipswill then pilot consultations with children and health professionals andtest out new resources for children and professionals.

Lewis said children from ethnic minorities faced a range of problemsincluding diseases that could be unfamiliar to professionals, such assickle cell anaemia.
