Looked-after children: New standards for children's homes

Children's homes and foster parents will have to meet exacting new standards to ensure that the health needs of all looked-after children are met.

The Healthy Care initiative, piloted in more than 30 councils and one secure children's home, will be extended nationwide. The scheme aims to ensure that all care settings provide a healthy environment, quality provision of health assessments, healthcare and treatment, and promote health and wellbeing.

A draft national standard for looked-after children drawn up by the programme's project team will now be an obligatory requirement for all those looking after children in care.

The National Service Framework will also announce that the Early Support Programme for disabled children up to the age of three will be expanded nationwide. At present it is being piloted in 10 areas.
