NCB was commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills to lookat the care planning system for looked-after children in prison. Basedon case studies of 12 children, a good practice guide, Tell Them Not ToForget About Us, has been developed to help professionals navigate thesystem and meet these children's needs.
It is estimated that 46 per cent of children in prison are or have beenin care, but although they are entitled to ongoing social work supportwhen in custody, there are few systems in place to ensure they receivethe help they need to plan for release.
Di Hart, principal officer at NCB's children in public care unit andauthor of the new resource, said: "The picture that emerges is one offragmented planning and poor outcomes. Young people often feel abandonedby the social workers they had come to rely on, and practitioners areconfused over their respective responsibilities."
