NCB Now: Comment - Looked-after children in prison: don't forget them

1 min read
What happens to looked-after children who find themselves in trouble?

Have recent initiatives, including investment from the Youth Justice Board in services for young offenders, succeeded in improving outcomes for these young people? A current NCB project, Looked after inside, suggests that we still have a long way to go.

The project's first challenge has been to establish just how many of these children there are, and what their legal status is. While children subject to care orders continue to be looked after in prison, those who have been in voluntary (S20) care do not, which means that they may have no-one taking responsibility for their welfare.

Surprisingly, it is impossible to get data on the numbers of these children.
