Health News: Hospitals - NHS money needed for play specialists

More NHS cash should be invested in hospital play therapists because of the impact they have on sick children and their families, experts say.

The call came during a week of celebration to mark the thirtieth anniversary of Great Ormond Street Hospital's pioneering Play in Hospital scheme.

Hospital play specialist Lizzie Penn, who works on the hospital's cardiac and respiratory ward, said there was a need to raise awareness of the "invaluable contribution" play specialists make in removing some of the stress and fear associated with hospital treatment.

"Communication is vital and a play specialist can be a link between families and members of staff," explained Penn.
