Health News: NHS Funding - Great Ormond St staff under threat

Great Ormond Street children's hospital says it will have to lay off staff unless the Government revises its price list for services.

The news follows the leak of a letter to ministers from the UK's fourchildren's hospitals, revealing they face a 22m loss in revenueunder the Government's payment-by-results reforms.

The Children's Health Alliance thought it had resolved problems with theprice list, which they complain underestimates the higher cost oftreating children with complex health needs (Children Now, 19-25 October2005).

However, recent changes to the tariff mean the four hospitals - AlderHey in Liverpool, Sheffield Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street andBirmingham Children's Hospital - again face cuts to break even.

A spokesman from Great Ormond Street said despite cutting costs, thehospital anticipated a "small number of redundancies".
