The children's national service framework says play should be availableat every step of a young patient's journey through acute care. Butrecent research has shown less than a third of accident and emergencyprocedures involved play specialists.
Play for Health outlines the structures and processes needed to reachthe goal for infants, children and adolescents.
It adds that services must be provided when young people are making thetransition to adult services and shows how play can be used to maintainlinks with home and schools during patients' stays.
Judy Walker, the play specialist who authored the document, said: "Thereneeds to be structure and training to continue to provide the bestservice."
