Health News: Hospice care - Public assumes the Government pays

The public believes, incorrectly, that children's hospices get most of their money from the Government, a poll to mark Children's Hospice Week has found.

A survey of 984 adults for the Association of Children's Hospicesdiscovered that nearly half believed that the Government provided atleast 50 per cent of the funding needed by children's hospices.

A further 15 per cent thought hospices were entirely state-funded. Butthe association says children's hospices get just five per cent of theirfunds from the Government.

"Hospices rely on public support to do their work and this misconceptionis likely to inhibit donations," said Barbara Gelb, chief executive ofthe association. "It also suggests that the public just assume that theGovernment take care of these children and their families."

The poll's publication coincided with the start of the eighth Children'sHospice Week, which started on 17 September and ends on 24September.
