Funding watch: Who's getting money and who's giving it - Governmentcash offers some relief for hospices

Children's hospices have welcomed a cash injection from the Government but say they still face an uncertain future. A total of 36 children's hospices have received the first tranche of emergency funds, pledged by the Prime Minister in May and worth 27m over the next three years.

Children's hospices, which are independent of the National HealthService and rely almost entirely on charitable donations, were plungedinto financial crisis after Lottery funding ended.

Barbara Gelb, chief executive of the Association of Children's Hospices'said: "This temporary funding will make a real difference to all ofEngland's children's hospices, some of which have had to make seriouscutbacks and which can now reinstate services."

However, Gelb also sounded a note of caution. "Children's hospices stillhave to raise millions of pounds from charitable donations every year,"she said. "The future sustainability of all providers of children'spalliative care depends on long-term financial support from theGovernment."
