13.4 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 13-15 in 1999-2001 (9 in Wales)

54.8 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15-17 in 1999-2001 (48.7 in Wales)

6.3% live and still births under 2,500g in 1993-1995 (6.8 per cent in Wales)

7.5% live and still births under 2,500g in 2002 (7.7 per cent in Wales)

In Swansea, the proportion of low weight babies has steadily increased over the last 10 years and has now reached the Welsh average.

Low birth weight is associated with poor maternal health and deprivation, poor diet and smoking in pregnancy. Wales has one of Europe's highest rates of low birth rate babies.
