26.5 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15-17 in 1999-2001 (48.7 in Wales)

6% live and still births under 2,500g in 1998 (7.5 per cent in Wales)

6.2% live and still births under 2,500g in 2002 (7.7 per cent in Wales)

Monmouthshire has a lower rate of low birth weight babies and teenage conception than average for Wales. It does not have levels of deprivation equivalent to some of its nearby counties, but average weekly income is less than the Welsh average. Many groups experience as much deprivation as in other parts of Wales, with two wards having higher proportions of households with dependent children (0-15) claiming family credit than any other in the Gwent region.
