- 9.2% of live births weighed less than 2,500 grams in 2002 (7.7 percent in England)

- 4.1 infant deaths under one week per 1,000 women in 2002 (5.2 inEngland)

South Tyneside's teenage pregnancy strategy states it has created anumber of positions to tackle its teenage pregnancy rate. These includea schools sex and relationships education co-ordinator, a pregnancyoptions adviser and a reintegration officer, to help any girl of schoolage continue her education.
