1.75 average number of decayed, missing or filled teeth in five-year-old children in 2003 (1.47 in England)

33.5 births per 1,000 girls under 18 in 2002 (42.8 in England and Wales)

6.2% of births under 2,500g in 2002 (8.1 per cent in England and Wales)

5.6 infant deaths per 1,000 births in 2002 (5.3 in England and Wales)

Louise Brewins, acting deputy of public health for Sheffield West PCT, said: "Probably the most efficient means of ensuring good oral health is through fluoridated water, which is not available within Sheffield West PCT. A number of initiatives are underway to improve oral health in young children. The most important are making the Brushing for Life scheme available to all children under the age of three and ensuring access to routine NHS dentistry."
